    Hi Rainer,
Absolutely, look under Archive/ Tour Archive on this site for the full list of the 2000+ concerts (the Chapter III ones are there but aren't counted in the 2000).

    Hi there,

is there anywhere a list about the over 2000 concerts of this amazing band and during the last decades?

    Nigel Stanworth (Saturday, 26 April 2025 15:03)

    Hi Heinz,
Sorry for the delay getting back to you. The Promoter cancelled the gigs, not within the control of the band I'm afraid.

    Hi Richard,
The current answer in no, Manfred did say that if anyone offered them UK dates they'd consider it but nothing planned at the moment.

    Christine (Sunday, 30 March 2025)

    Hi Nigel,
thanks for the information. I just took a look in Greg Russo's book and he mentions the different titles as well. The LP I own has the number you mentioned. Apart from that I have got the wooden box and the 40th anniversary box and just found out, that on both Chance releases the title is called "Hello, I am your heart" as you wrote below.
I have got an old cassette with radio interviews I recorded at that time. I going to search them and look if they are still playable. I remember that during an interview with RTL the song was played.

    Nigel Stanworth (Sunday, 30 March 2025 10:51)

Hi Christine, Now that is a very good question - which I don't know the answer to.
    1) The original version by Denis Linde is "Hello, This is Your Heart" - you can hear this on this site (under Gallery/ Original Versions Pg 1)
    2) For almost all MMEB releases going back to the original release in 1980 it has been "Hello, I Am Your Heart' but it does appear both from your comment and a comment on Discogs that a few releases have it listed as "Hello, This Is Your Heart'. The Discogs comment notes "The songs are identical, but the Covers and Inner sleeves are different. Both LPs wear the Number 202 970 -320 and are made in Western Germany." The first release of the 40th Anniversary box set also had it listed as "Hello, I Am Your Heart".
So short answer is I don't know!

    Christine (Sunday, 30 March 2025 08:48)

Question on the track "Hello, this is your heart" on the album "Chance" was changed to "Hello, I am your heart"?
My LP version released in October 1980 has the first version whereas my CD Box
    the second. Any hints?

    Nate (Thursday, 27 March 2025 03:46)

    Dear Manfred,
I'm in Kentucky, USA ....I just wanted to drop you a line and say a few things. In my opinion, you are the greatest musician of all time! I'm 35 years old and discovered your music in 1995 and have been hooked ever since. I've noticed Earth Band hasn't played in the states since around 1977-1978, and I read an article that you went home with $1500 when Blinded was number one, but that hasn't stopped me.

I always say, "Anything Manfred touches, turns to gold", musically speaking, of course. I cannot name one track you've ever recorded that I don't like. I've been married for almost 12 years now and created an MMEB fan out of my wife, who is ill. She absolutely loves the band.

I thank you for all the music. Queen, Elvis Presley, Miles Davis...anyone you name is not nearly as talented as you are! You, to me, are number one of them all and HIGHLY underrated! I listen to Lies (All Through the 80's) daily to get me through each and every hardship.

I've heard you say MMEB is a second rate band in recent interviews, and respect your opinion, but to me, you all are first rate and amazing at absolutely everything! I love the current incarnation of the band and watch daily for new clips on YouTube, wishing I had a gig to attend here in the states.

I look up to you so much! Your intelligence, musical abilities and all...they are par to none! You are the greatest of all musicians past, present, and surely future! I wish I was half the man that you are, sir! I thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for the music over all the years! My favorite albums of all albums ever are Roaring Silence, Watch, Angel Station and Chance (in order of favoritism).

I thank you for reading this and please, continue doing what you do, sir. I'm here in my small town or 60,000 people, spreading my love for Earth Band. And especially the genius behind it all. You have made an impact on me that I'll carry for the rest of my life!

    Sincerely,

    Nate Mayfiel

    Colin Hart (Friday, 21 March 2025 23:46)

    Thanks Michael,
So did I, despite quite heavy airplay on radio one, I could never track down a copy of the single in the shops. Not sure a another r single purchase would have impacted it chart position.
I often think what would have happened if the Watch so goes had been released in a different order , i.e. Davy first , then California then Mighty. I think the band would have really gained a wider audience .

One other observation of the impact of Dave Flett. Is it just a coincidence that he played on the band's two most successful.albums ?

    Michael Sanz (Tuesday, 18 March 2025 23:09)

    Hello,

I attended only one Watch Tour gig, in Stockholm, Sweden, on 9 March 1978. The Band did definitely not play 'California'. At that gig anyway. Well, as far as I can remember… ;-) I know, because l liked the song.

    Cheers,

    Michael

    Nigel Stanworth (Tuesday, 11 March 2025 10:25)

    Hi Colin,
I honestly can't tell you 100% as to whether "California" was played on the Watch tour - I did see it but it was a long time ago! The Setlists are shown on this site under 'Archive' - these are largely based on bootleg recordings for the various years so I know these songs were played. However 'Watch' is a bootleg black hole, I've only ever found one recording for that tour and the setlist shown reflects that sample of one. Be interested if anyone else can remember.

Just curious if the band played California given Chris apparently wasn't too keen on the track.

    Hi Nigel,
Very many thanks t for the info. I,be made contact with Michael, so hopefully the "The Final Round" CD is sorted - thanks for your help.
Also thanks for the info on the gigs. We would definitely want to hear a full sets ,so will avoid the festival's I think, is there a venue you'd /anyone recommend given the travel logistics from the UK? Many thanks

  • #367

    Nigel Stanworth (Saturday, 01 March 2025 16:50)

    Hi Colin,
As a rule of thumb and gigs in 'Halle', Clubs or Theatres are guaranteed to be full sets, festival dates are more likely to be shortened sets (but not all). Open air dates which are not festivals should be full set also. Hope that helps. 'Halle' and Theatres will usually be seated, clubs are more likely to be staning.
    Kind Regards
    Nigel

    Hi Colin,
There are details on the following page:
https://www.christhompson-central.com/dates/ - the IBAN and BIC codes are there for payment internationally. However its not clear if there are any CD's left so I think your best bet would be to email Michael Widmann (management) by email directly:
    management@christhompson-central.com
Looks like Michael should be able to confirm the information you need.
    Hope that helps

    Nigel Stanworth (Saturday, 04 January 2025 16:59)

    Hi Robert,
I believe the tour for the date you mention (April '75) would have been a 'Good Earth' branded one (i.e. the backdrop behind the drums). Mick was still with the band at that time. Dates later in the year were definitely 'Nightingales and Bombers' branded and by that time involved Chris Thompson and Dave Flett. The setlist was in transition at that time and interestingly the Good Earth tracks had disappeared from the setlist by the end of 1974 from the information I have available. There were definitely tracks from the upcoming album played before release of Nightingales and Bombers (22 Aug 75).
    Hope that helps
    Nigel

    Hello Platform End,

What a great website. I’ve been a big MMEB fan since 1976 and have been enjoying the 40th anniversary box set. ‘The Roaring Silence’ is one of my favourite albums.

I have a quick question. I have a poster from the 30 April 1975 gig at the Philipshalle in Düsseldorf where the band were supported by the Climax Blues Band (though I’ve never 100% been able to verify whether Climax were actually there!). I’m just curious: would MMEB have been promoting ‘The Good Earth’ on that tour, or the soon-to-appear ‘Nightingales & Bombers’? Or both? Thanks for any thoughts.

This show in 1974 didn't happen as Frank Zappa + the Mothers of Invention couldn't land at the airport due to bad weather conditions: snow. I was with MMEB and we were possibly one of the last planes able to land.

    Hi David,
    'Stepping Sideways' was essentially complete, a few test pressings had been issued but I believe it was then decided that the band's sound had evolved rapidly and consequently it was never released. A number of the tracks made it onto the eponymous first album. The tracklist intended for 'Stepping Sideways' was as follows;

    Ned Kelly
    Ashes To The Wind
    Part Time Man
    Living Without You
    Jump Sturdy
    California Coastline
    Ain't No Crime
    Holly Holy
    Tribute

There were a number of other tracks which didn't make it onto Stepping Sideways including Messin Up The Land. Some of these can be heard on the "Odds & Sods" compilation (or if you search YouTube you may just find the complete set).
"Ned Kelly" was originally written/ recorded by Fotheringay.
    Hope that Helps

    Hi Douglas,
Yes indeed, below is an article from NME at the time:
    New Musical Express – 15 May 1971
MANFREDS PULL OUT OF AUSTRALIA – KINKS OPT IN!
The Manfred Mann group flew back to London on
Tuesday, cutting short its projected month long
Australasian tour by three weeks...This followed an
incident in a Melbourne hotel room, when the
outfit’s tour manager Bob Foster was allegedly
attacked. A spokesman commented: “Bob had
threats made on his life, and was given 24 hours to
get out of Australia. Manfred feared for his own
safety as a result of this, and was anxious to return
to Britain as soon as possible.
The group which had previously been in an
argument with hotel management about the manner
of its dress, could offer no explanation for the
threats. The Manfreds had been touring with Deep
Purple, and had played to a 35,000 capacity crowd
in Sydney prior to the incident. Purple is continuing
    with its schedule.

Till now i have all three albums (incl. Hug: Neon Dream) on vinyl; plus all 7'' Singles - also from Hug, Mike Hugg's Freeway and Full Alert.

    Hi Will,
Manfred 'merch' has always been available at the live performances going right back to the 70's (and probably the 60's but I'm too young to have been to those). There's also a lot of Manfred related T-shirts etc.. available from 'other sources' which while not official will have the required designs. The current official MMEB shirts can be seen at https://www.plastichead.com/artist/manfred-mann-s-earth-band?cat2=tstops
    Hope that helps

The new originals page is a great addition to the site. I noticed that Lane Tietgen's name is missing from Martha's Madman, and there are two more jazz tracks on Masque, "Ornithology" by Benny Harris (often attributed to Charlie Parker, who first released it) and "Sister Sadie" by Horace Silver.

I'm not sure it's ever been mentioned here but Denny Newman died last year, sadly. I see this version of "Telegram to Monica" is from a posthumous album produced by John Lingwood and released on Creature Music - I missed that. It also has a track called "Man on Ice", which I presume is what became "Neptune (Icebringer)".

Hi well hope this might hit someone who can help me. I want to contact John LIngwood. I think he still might play with the Earth Band (indeed I think I have just see a pic from a euro concert in 2023) and maybe Roger Chapman. I am an old very good school buddy who last saw John in the early 70s (had he been working on Rocky Horror Show?). Anyway I guess I am looking for an email address. Maybe someone here may be able to pass this on to a band member, or whatever. Any help or suggestion would be much appreciated --- my address is pacemail@btinternet.com. Many thanks

    Hi Tim,
The fan-club was active in the 90's and early 2000's when the Platform-End 'fanzine' used to be issued on paper. As technology took over this migrated to an on-line version which sort of ran out of steam. There was however a vast amount of information about the band so this site was set up to allow access to the old articles, provide things like the tour archive.
    Hope that helps

    Hello,

Should one consider oneself as "truly creative", since one considers the rendering of music pieces to be dealt as "work" ? Or one should believe God would be the only one who creates, or if there's no god, random universes appear now and then without any creative intent, so the concept of creation would only make sense to those who believe it was all planned and decided by someone (or a team)... Or one would evaluate "creativity" in terms or proportion(versus traditional ways/common established practice), from low to high... ?

Does music that was rendered in order to generate trips / landscapes (audition/sight etc synaesthesia) actually create those landscapes and therefore become "creative music", yet possibly poorly created, and amateur-ish ?

Wishing better sleep than alluded to in the Cityvision-Backstage interview, thanks for reading,

    Jean-Marie

Just come across this new book

"Manfred Mann's Earth Band in the 1970s" Author: John van der Kiste

Having moved from jazz, Blues and R'n'B to out-and-out pop in his various 1960s bands, keyboard player Manfred Mann went back to the drawing board in 1971 with a new quartet, Manfred Mann's Earth Band, and the intention of focusing on progressive rock. With a repertoire that leant partly on radical rearrangements of songs by Bob Dylan and then Bruce Springsteen, largely instrumental epics that borrowed from Gustav Holst's The Planets suite, and improvisations based around the interplay between Manfred's newly-acquired moog synthesiser and the lead guitar of Mick Rogers, who left in 1975 but later returned, they soon built up a formidable live reputation throughout much of Europe (particularly in Germany) and America. Apart from the Holst-inspired 'Joybringer', a top ten hit in 1973, British success was slow in coming, until a cover version of Springsteen's 'Blinded by the Light' and its parent album The Roaring Silence three years later took their status to a new level on both sides of the Atlantic. This book examines the nine albums, fluctuating fortunes and various line-up changes from what was to be their best and most prolific decade.

Klaus Voormann also makes reference in his book to Manfred discovering the Mellotron in the 60s and slathering it all over some tracks ("Ha! Ha! Said the Clown" being one of the more obvious examples).

  • #269

    Geoff (Wednesday, 11 January 2023 17:53)

many thanks Nigel. That more or less confirms what I thought that there is mellotron being used on Father of Night. What else could it have been in 1973 , after all ?

  • #268

    Nigel Stanworth (Wednesday, 11 January 2023 12:34)

    Hi Geoff,
Yes I believe you are correct, however finding 'proof' is more problematic. For example the sleeve on Solar Fire lists Manfred playing Organ and Synthesiser with no mention of the Mellotron. The Discogs site does list Mellotron against the album.
Planet Mellotron https://www.planetmellotron.com/revmanfred.htm has a comprehensive list of Manfred albums the Mellotron was used on dating back to the 60's band, through Chapter 3 to Earth Band. Whether it is completely accurate I can't say (the internet can become self perpetuating) but given these guys know their Mellotron its probably a good source.
I've been through my press cuttings folder and there are definite refences to the Mellotron in a number of the articles, extracts below:

6-10 May 1971 - The following report is from The Highway Star web site and relates to the Manfred Mann Chapter III tour of Australia in 1971 (this was the Mk1 MMEB line-up prior to the name change).
Manfred Mann Chapter III followed. Manfred had brought a four-piece group with him featuring Australian Mick Rogers on vocals and guitar and Manfred with his organ, a Mellotron vc3 and other sophisticated electronic gadgetry.

    L.A. Voice – 15 February 1974 - SOLAR FIRE (POLYDOR PD-6019)
“Father of Day, Father of Night,” an almost obscure Dylan drama from ‘New
Morning’ done majestic choral and gothic organ, mellotron melancholia.

    Melody Maker – 30 March 1974
Manfred Mann's back in the Workhouse again. Workhouse Studios that is, down the Old Kent Road. From behind the control room door, strange electronic twitterings rise
and fall, then majestic sounds of a Mellotron.

    Beetle (Canadian) – March 1975
"The more keyboards you have, the easier it gets. That's the thing. I must tell you, it's easier now with the three than it is with two. The hardest thing is to do it all with one. Much, much more difficult. You see, I'm trying to resist this desire to have more keyboards. I think that if I got another keyboard, which I probably will, I'll probably get an electric piano. I think I've got enough synthesisers."
The delicate sensitivity of a mellotron is one reason for not dragging one around on tour, but the questionable quality of the reproduction is also a major factor.
"Any band you hear with a mellotron, unless the mellotron is playing on its own, sounds very muddy. When everyone's playing together, you've got this big orchestra going 'mmmmmmm'. It's always a very muddy sound and I've tried it. I tried it on
"Father of Day" because we recorded it with a mellotron and I tried it for one gig. I played it for fifteen seconds and that's my sole use of the mellotron."

    Stage Pass – December 1976
“Right now I've got two synthesizers, an organ and Leslie — two organs and Leslies when I'm in England — a mellotron. Fender Rhodes and I'm about to buy a string synth' and a spare synthesizer in case one of the others breaks down when we're on the road. I'll probably sell it next year and get a polyphonic!”

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Nigel
It seems to me, listening to some of the tracks on Solar Fire and the Good Earth in particular, that I detect the sound of a mellotron. Am I right in thinking Manfred did occasionally use one to record ? Many thanks.

Thanks for the update. I'm going to make an 'executive' decision here and say your Bletchley gig was Feb 1977, probably as a warm up before they left for the US tour. 'They Shoot Horses Don't They' first charted on 12 Feb 1977 so this looks to make the most sense date wise.

    Hi Guy,
Thanks for the information. Think it must have been a warm up gig, the other Roaring Silence dates are taken from the programme and roadies notes. I've added it in Sept '76 to the tour archive prior to the UK Roaring Silence date, the other option would be early/mid Jan '77 prior to the German leg of the tour. Can you remember if it was definitely 1977?

    Mike S (Tuesday, 02 August 2022 23:22)

Can we expect some news on a new album anytime soon? It's been mentioned a few times over the years that it's being worked on. If one doesn't get released soon, surely the band must have created more than enough un-released material over the past few years for a second edition of Odds & Sods (Mis-takes & Out-takes)!!! Greetings from a frustrated, desperate to hear new material, MMEB fan :-)

In a news section on this website, I have read that Manfred answers some fanmails. Is that actually the truth? Where can I find an email address or a mailbox address?

    Thank you.

    Nigel Stanworth (Tuesday, 19 April 2022 11:34)

    Hi John,
Thanks for your thoughts, agree Manfred is rare in fading out the main rhythm then bringing it all back, something he does superbly with Mick Rogers when they play off each other.
With regards to "We Love You Lil", isn't that a song by The Animals rather than Manfred Mann? I think it has a folk refrain in it but can't place it.

    John Watt (Tuesday, 19 April 2022 00:08)

I’ve followed Manfred Mann for decades and even before he was widely available, paid $40.00 here in the US for one of his import CDs. He is one of just a few musicians/composers who starts with a main instrumental rhythm then dares to gradually fade it out and replace it with other instruments and rhythm then bring them all together in harmony.

A good example is one song has always perplexed me and I would like some help. ‘What is We Love You Lil’ based upon? I have my thoughts but would appreciate other fans confirming my suspicions.

    Hi Nigel,
Thanks for this listing! Here are the venues for Finland Oct '96:
    - 10 October Lappeenranta, Finland (Club Doris)
    - 11 October Helsinki, Finland (Club Tavastia)
I happened to run the first MMEB home page, so Graham Chapman kindly arranged a ticket and backstage pass for the Helsinki gig.

Sadly the web pages were later deleted by mistake by the university server administrator, who also inadvertently destroyed the backups. The Wayback Machine has a copy for when I'm feeling nostalgic :)

    Kim Gisborne (Monday, 21 February 2022 20:42)

    Hi Nigel,

A few more for the list, from 83 and 86 when I lived in Sussex. I have put an asterisk by the shows I went to, and I am aware of live cassette recordings of all of the others (to verify dates).

4 Feb 83 - Cardiff, St. Davids Hall (tour warm-up)
    * 10 Feb 83 - Crawley, Leisure Centre (tour warm-up)

    * 21 Mar 86 - Brentwood, Essex Institute of Higher Education
    * 24 Mar 86 - Woking, Old Schoolhouse
    25 Mar 86 - Newmarket, Cabaret Club
    * 26 Mar 86 - Chelmsford, Chancellor Hall
    * 23 July 86 - Southend, Technical College
    24 July 86 - Brentwood, Hermit Club
    * 19 Aug 86 - Woking, Old Schoolhouse
Also, the venue for 3 June 91 in Guildford was called Flicks.

Hope these help. The 23 July 86 show is definite, I remember Chris Thompson joking about the royal wedding earlier in the day (Andy & Fergie). I wasn't at the 24 July 86 show (I note you have a Danish festival listed) - all I can say is a have a cassette of the Hermit Club, Brentwood show (not that I've listened to it in years!)

    Cheers,
    Kim

Victor: Thankfully, Greg Russo's updated release of Mannerisms does actually identify the sources of some of these passages. In the case of Pleasure and Pain, it's actually another Massenet passage, specifically Méditation, from Thaïs.

    Hello!

Just wanted to share a little bit of trivia with you :) I was re-listening to "Soft Vengeance" the other day (can't believe it's been almost 25 years since it was released!) and my mom pointed out that "Wherever Love drops pt2" has a keyboard melody that seemed familiar. After a short investigation we discovered that indeed Manfred was quoting Massenet's Élégie in the introduction of that "song". I'm sure many of you are very well aware of that, but it was a nice little detective trip on YouTube for us.

I vaguely remember that "Pleasure and Pain" also contins a classical quote played on the Hammond in the introductory part of the song, but I can't remember the name of the composition and the author. Bach? Hayden? If anyone on the PE remembers, please let me know :)

I hope you had a great Christmas and Happy New 2022!

You have a date for MMEB on June 21st, 1973 at the Tower Theatre in Upper Darby, PA. While it is possible they also played there, I saw them that night at the Arlo Theatre in Camden, NJ on a bill with Climax Blues Band and Status Quo. In addition to my memory of having seen them, I also have a Status Quo Piledriver Tour itinerary link (https://www.quogigography.net/92.html) that backs up the lineup of the show I vividly remember.

    Hi Phil,
Don't know if you have seen, 'The Earth Band' (i.e. minus Manfred) are playing the HRG Prog XII event at Great Yarmouth 17-20 March 2022 (EB headline Thursday).
Now it is not confirmed but the band have always played a 'warm up' date the night before these events (as was the case with Frome) so may be worth keeping an eye open for a gig in the preceding day(s), possibly somewhere in East Anglia?
Manfred is still planning to play with the band in Europe by the way.

    Hi
I'm a big fan of Mannfred Mann's Earth Band.

Some info in the great timeline concert list.
The Mannfred Mann's Earth Band has visited my area (Haugesund) in Norway 4 times + a lot of other times in Norway.

    Here is the correction.

04 November 2005, Haugesund, Byscenen. (Missing the venue: Byscenen)
02 June 2005, Kopervik (not Haugesund) Venue: Festplassen (In a big tent, festival)
06 October 2012, Kopervik (MISSIN in the list) Venue: A big tent in the town sentrum.
25 Februar 2017, Haugesund, Missing venue: Festiviteten Theatre.

I was at both Kopervik concert's. Missing the Haugesund gigs, do to sold out in hours.
I recorded the Kopervik gigs for my own use.

The band will play in Haugesund on 29th April next year. I have ticket.

    Cheers

Looks like Mannthology is now streamable on youtube (and presumably spotify, et al, but youtube is my streaming site of choice especially while at work). I am fascinated to discover per my comment from about a year ago that the Going Underground single mixes featured here are still different from the ones on the old remasters, but it does answer my question about timestamps quite handily. (And yes, it does indeed seem that the US album and German single versions of Third World Service are different, but not by much. Going to be fun to do a spot-the-differences on some of the various versions here...)

"Do you think Manfred will ever perform in England again" - I have as much idea as you Andy. There are three factors in play, Covid, Brexit and Age, how they will play out over the next 12-18 months is anyone's guess. We just need to keep our fingers crossed.

  • #191

    Nigel Stanworth (Saturday, 19 June 2021 15:35)

    Hi Julian (and Jens),
Ian Tompson (who worked in The Workhouse at the time of the fire) has confirmed that it wasn't arson. The fire brigade suspected that it was due to faulty electrics related to a new air conditioner that had been installed (that was the hot spot). Rick Astley was in the studio at the time recording his ‘Hold Me In Your Arms’ album. He lost his album and it had to be totally re-recorded, delaying its release by a few months.
(I have updated the Platform End to include this information.)

Not sure what the exact cause of the fire was - let me see if I can find out.
Mannthology was released on 11 June, however for German fans the delivery from the manufacturers is currently being held up in Customs with the revised 'release; date now 23 June.

Philip Cohen claims that the Workhouse fire was arson, but I don't know where he got that. He said, I quote: "The intent was to destroy a project being produced at the studio by dance music producers Stock,Aitken & Waterman."

By the way, what is up with the release date of Mannthology? I thought it was already released?

If you like live gigs here you can listen to the Earth Band from 26.06.1972 Town Hall, Adelaide, AUS:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1q70NZ2o3XI

The tracks are: I'm gonna have you all, Ashes to the wind, Black and Blue, Stout/Magnified and Quinn. The running time is 44 minutes.
It's a private recording (not mine), sound is not overwhelming, but ok.
The Video includes a list with the gigs of the australian tour 1972 (many of them are not in the tour archive)

Manfred Mann Chapter Three at Woods of Dartmouth Festival 3rd of may 1970.
Here you can find very rare pictures of the band; never seen them before.
May someone can help to identify some of the less known members of the band.
Living and Collinge seem to be in the band during the US-Tour; I've read they left the band before the US-Tour.

    Hi Jorg,
Greg Russo put together all the Radio Days material and sourced the tracks himself, so sadly no the Venus & Furs stuff you sent me wasn't the template for that CD.

Hello, (doesn’t need to be released here)
one of the best releases of the last years were the Radio Days CDs.
Years ago i've sent to you (Nigel) a CD with the music from the "Venus in furs" movie, directly taken from the movie.
Was that the template for the second CD of Radio Days Vol 3 (Chapter Three)?
I ask only for information, because that would make me happy.
The new Deluxe Box Mannthology is also already ordered here in Germany

My brother tells a story of traveling in Europe in the 70s where he met another musician from Sweden while in Italy. As they played for a small crowd that gathered, my brother informed them they were in Manfred Mann. Not sure that the crowd grew very much based on the lie because they weren't very good, unlike Manfred Mann.

Well I guess the tracklist answers my question from almost a year ago about whether or not the Davy's single for Budapest is edited or extended from the album cut. ;)

The DVD collection is up on US Amazon, and I have to admit that I'm tempted to push the buy button on that one, but the info page claims that it's a region 2 DVD. I would presume it's PAL format, but my understanding was that the discs are actually region free. (If they are, then I'd still have means to play them.) Is Amazon wrong?

I believe that Mannthology will be available on CD-Warehouse next week for order (label's own site) and they will ship internationally. Plastichead also ship internationally and have it available for pre-order.
In terms of signed copies - I'd be surprised given the current logistics, Manfred now lives in Sweden and the rest of the band in the UK.

...If I want to gripe, I don't quite get the sequencing. It seems to be pretty wild. I would've preferred a chronological approach, even if it means sometimes having two versions of one song in succession. Going from Mardi Gras Day to Demons and Dragons is a bit much, and it could've been grouped by eras. But I'll reserve judgement until I've actually heard it.

And to the comments below, I still think that both Stepping Sideways and the third Chapter Three album (Fish & Chips) should be released in original order at some point. But this is a good release as any to celebrate the anniversary.

  • #165

    Nigel Stanworth (Saturday, 01 May 2021 16:07)

    Hi Julian,
Hope you enjoy this when it comes out. The version of 'Father of Day' is the UK stereo single mix with full ending that came from the "EMI Introduce The New Bronze Age" LP.
'Tribute' is the B side of the US single 'Living Without You.'
'Footprints' is as per the album, there is no radio mix that I'm aware of.
Where we've been able to locate 'different' versions of the singles then they have been included.
There's also some great anecdotes from the band members (past and present) which provide some interesting insights into how some of the songs came together, Chris Thompson provides a fascinating insight into how Budapest Live came about.

Well, that's nice! As always the announcement passed me by until I specifically opened this page. Among other things finally, a DVD featuring the current line-up!

Incidentally, I was just recently wondering why "A Fool I Am" seems to be the redheaded stepchild in the MMEB catalog. I really like the song & think it's better than some that made the Chance album. Yet it was not included on either Odds & Sods or the 40th anniversary box set bonus disc. In fact, it's only CD release before this has been the remaster of Chance. So it's nice that the song is being reissued so I can also get it on CD.

"First time on CD" for the 7" edit of "Father of Day" shouldn't be correct though - it is on Best Of Volume II from the late 90s, as is the edit of "Tribute" and I think a few more. It *would* be appropriate for "Footprints" though, since I assume this is the radio mix, which has not been released on CD, right?

    Hi Heinz,
The fire at the Workhouse means that almost all the master tapes for the albums were lost so the 'new' material just isn't there. The set collects all the singles including those just released in one country e.g. Norway, or in a few cases never released (the singles which would have accompanied Stepping Sideways).
Mannthology collects all the singles together for the first time and there is stuff on there I hadn't heard before in its single format. The accompanying book (100 pages) has high quality photos and extensive notes including some great contributions from past and present band members. The Story of MMEB documentary has been put together by fans for the fans and at 100 minutes is a great watch.

Not sure about the European recordings, I know Greg Russo's book suggest they are from Europe but the source that Denver was where the recordings were done is Manfred himself (interviewed by Andy Taylor for the Plain Talking CD which was released back in 1992). Martha is a studio recording I believe . Circles and Chicago Institute are also studio recordings.

Hi, thank you for the information regarding my question.

However I found some information on the internet that the two live recordings was done in Europe but it didn’t say where. That said regarding your friends information that they were done in Denver doesn’t ad up.

I think it’s strange that no one has asked about this before and I think it would be of relevance for all fan’s to figure this out.

There are even some people that several other tracks on the album also are live recordings, such as Martha, Circles and Chicago Institute?

    Hi Nicolaas,
The Good Earth promotion was hugely popular and in the end I believe it was impossible to register every single claim individually. The land is still there and you have the rights to access it to the present day.
There is a copy of the 'Platform End' magazine in this site (https://www.platform-end.co.uk/archive-1/platform-end/magazines-7-9/ ) which has more details.
In 1995 the BBC filmed a visit to The Good Earth - you can see this on You Tube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nu5oUELdRA

And, as I bought more MMEB music on ITunes over the last few days, I couldn't find a live version of "Time is right" (and neither on YouTube). Did MMEB ever play "Time is right" live? If they did, does a live version appear on a Cd / DVD ?

Happy happy birthday dear Manfred! Here's to hopefully seeing you back on stage once all this madness is over. The SWR1 Hitparade had quite a few MMEB songs playing today, and right now "July Morning" on which we all know who played the Moog solo!

PS: I think the Prog Magazine / LouderSound story is a bit bogus. There's a photo in it that's clearly not Manfred, and the claim that Klaus Voormann suggested the MMEB name seems to be a bit of chinese whispers. The Wikipedia writer refers to Voormann's book, but I have that, and Klaus only said that in his opinion the music of the D'Abo led Manfred Mann group lacked balls and wasn't really rock'n'roll to him. It's a tenuous link to suggest a connection to MMEB, and we know that the name came from Chris Slade.

I know I’m gonna miss it, but I have a whole lot of other things that I would like to do and beside that, it’s time!
It’s not happening tomorrow, it will take me about 2 years to do this as I would like to play in all the places we have played regularly over the years, one more time and hopefully play in many others as well during this time.
My planned finish date will be around my 75th birthday in March 2022.

    Take care and stay well

    Hello from the USA,
I would love to see the band live....although we in the US aren’t lucky enough to get an MMEB gig. Is there any chance Chris Thompson will be playing with the band? I’d love to see them live, but of course with the legendary Thompson.

    Hope you all are well!

    Hi all,

Been slowly working on getting my MMEB digital collection set up. (Thank goodness for all the FLAC files on Bandcamp, probably the best place to get a lossless copy of, say, A Fool I Am -- though it seems like the recordings there are based on the old ca. '99 remasters and not the new ones from 2011, as the truncated Black and Blue on Messin' would attest.) About the only thing you can't easily get is the US exclusives off Afrika, which I'm thankful got a digital remaster by One Way that's not *too* hard to find if you look in the right places (not Amazon, clearly)

I've also been trawling through the Discogs listing to try to figure out what if anything could be missing -- Two Friends has obviously never been anywhere near a CD, though thankfully all the singles (including the ones from Plains Music) after it appeared on CDs.
I'm a little curious about the Budapest Davy's single -- anyone know if the 12" is just the album cut? If so that means the 7" is even more edited down than the album version was -- a tragic fate to befall that song! Shame it didn't get a proper restoration on the Budapest DVD, but at least the concert recording seems to exist in bootlegs on YouTube even if it is only in mono (almost certainly a VHS transfer; the technology of the day, alas!).

That said it seems like some of the singles from around that era were given pretty odd timestamps on the records -- the 12" cut of Going Underground surely didn't have the extended version at ~7:10 and the 7" version at 5:01!? Makes trying to find the stuff that slipped away from CD releases all the more frustrating. I'm going to hazard a guess that the timestamp on Third World Service's 7" is a bit wrong as well -- is that edit the same as the (shorter) US album release, with the radio announcer in the intro and outro?

Anyway thanks y'all and hoping these unfortunate times you all stay well!!

Sometimes u discover an album that just resonates with your emotions in such a big way that it impacts yourself. After maybe 20 years or so I just had that experience with Manfred Mann Chapter Three first album from 69. What a masterpiece. I simply love the entire album. It resonates with me at so many levels. Fantastic piece of work. I'll chersh this album forever. Thank you Manfred Mann.

    Julian (Wednesday, 18 December 2019 15:33)

Thanks, Nigel. This solidified my decision to see the band in Heilbronn.

Had a nice chat with Ian and Robert before the show - although I'm not sure the latter understood my complaints about the lyrics in "For You", oh well (all the live recordings with him miss some songs...but this one song, which others have done much more justice, *always* remains!)... "give me my money back, don't want it anymore..." *ahem*

The gig was great as usual, with some limiting factors.... I thought it was too loud. Not deafeningly so, but the last time they played at the venue in 2012, I did not wear earplugs - this time I did. John Lingwood is such a loud drummer, I'm not sure he even needs amplification! Vocals also had a shrill edge at times. Other than that the mix was good, perhaps guitars too loud compared to keys, but I just wish the volume had been kept a notch down. Incidentally, Ian agreed with me that the band(s) sounded awful in Fürth 2016!

The other factor is that the setlist has just become so predictably boring, even with a few nice surprises like a great Mick Rogers solo spot before "Father...", a full version of "Blinded" with guitar solo!! (but no "She Was", alas), "Spirits" (with a pretty good Mick solo, although the song never sounded as good in recent years as it did in the first half of the band's career, dunno why) or Mick's quick "Silent Night"... I just sincerely hope that this will change with the new album. It's not encouraging to go see the band more often, even if the songs and solos always sound different, when they're still playing more or less the same set that I saw seven years earlier, apart from "Dancing in the Dark" replaced by "Stronger". MMEB have such a great back catalogue, it's a shame that most of the songs never get played. And who knows how much longer they'll be able to continue. Manfred and Mick seem to be healthy and fit but...

And if for some reason, they think they have to play every song in the current set (not forgetting that casual fans will know neither "Captain Bobby Stout" nor "Martha's Madman"), I'd like to see at least changing some of the arrangements back to the original versions. The current versions are pretty old now too (sometimes played for a longer period than the originals), often going back to the 90s! John could certainly play "...Carol" at the original tempo (see Budapest), "Martha" (which has now been played more often in its current incarnation than the original) could be chopped down and made a bit punchier. I especially miss the short, but ecstatic guitar solo from the WATCH version, and the double vocal near the end, which shows Manfred's arranging genius so well. Not saying the current version is *bad*, but...

I picked up all of the "Radio Days" volumes (disappointing: No listing of writing & mastering credits or track times...) and the Chapter Three albums. To my surprise, even though they have the download code in the booklet and state that there are no bonus tracks... they are there! On the disc! It certainly makes more sense than adding bonus tracks onto vinyl albums (?!), but I wonder if this is the case for the MMEB albums too? (In that case, it makes it even more annoying that I'm still missing some tracks that aren't on the 40th anniversary box set or Odds & Sods, I'm especially thinking of the b-side "A Fool I Am"...) And what does this tell me about the mastering, are the main albums actually the 2011 remasters?! Seems a bit disingenuous to act as if the bonus tracks were absent, then to discover they're actually there... if I had something to say, I'd update the packaging, and do something about the boring blackness of the artwork while I'm at it...

(I know I sound like an endless complainer - I did enjoy the gig, I swear I do...! And I'll be promoting the hell out of the new album when it surfaces!)

    Hi,

Not sure if anyone can help as it is probably 25/30 years since the release of MM Box 1 but the booklet that I got with the box was not printed correctly. It repeated some pages of text and on the opposite pages you need to hold the booklet up to a mirror to be able to read it – not sure if this will make any sense unless someone has/had the same issue with their one.

Don’t suppose anyone has a PDF or scan of the booklet in it’s correct form they could post up.

The Konserthus is wide, so a front row seat like mine felt a long way away , but Mick still came over to say hello. Thanks to Robert for chatting to us at the stall after the gig, modestly gentlemanly, straight after a great show.
Ive got Steve's stage prompt again, same as for Helsingborg in March and Graz in August.
I'm aiming to do another gig in Norway and in Augsburg.

Happy birthday, Manfred! I'm looking forward to (hopefully) seeing you again in Heilbronn. MMEB were the only rock band I've ever seen at that venue with a good sound mix! Not too loud, well-balanced...

A curious thought: Apart from the singer, the current Earth Band line-up is exactly the same as the one that recorded "Criminal Tango". Why not try one or two songs from that album? I'd like the criminally ;-) underrated "Killer on the Loose", I think Robert's voice might suit that track. According to setlist.fm MMEB never played it live?!

    HI,

just noticed for 27 December 75 at Ludwigshafen, Germany you have the wrong venue listed. It is Friedrich-Ebert-Halle (or short Eberthalle like it is named in some other cases). For 1999, 18-Sep there's a small typo in the same venue: Freidric must be Friedrich.

    Hi Nigel,

another one, but one that's a little mystery to me. It is supposedly a gig in Vienna on 10-Apr-83, which kind of makes sense after the Budapest concerts. But on 09-Apr they played in Cardiff, on the 13th in London and inbetween a day after Cardiff in Vienna? Not completely impossible but logistically very challenging, I'd say.

    Hi,
I hope to find a little help on this platform.
In the early 70's, I first heard about the very, very good live performance of the Earthband.
I think it was in 1971, on BFBS (in Germany) they played live Versions of "Meat" and "Glorified magnified". I Never found these versions, unil this time. Nowhere I have found anything about it. Maybe it was a concert of BBC....
But the only CD I have owned, is a CD from BBC, but the songs are not included.
I think I have nearly all official records and a few Bootlegs, but without these 2 songs...
Do someone has an Idea where I can find them?

    Hopefully, Ralf.

Julian (this time correctly with an "i"!) (Thursday, 15 August 2019 14:59)

There's a yawn in my ear... I think this slew of unorganized and partially unanswered posts (yeah, 5.1 albums aren't possible because the multitracks are gone, but not everybody knows this...) shows that there is still need for a forum. Forgot to mention, the forum was a great archive of information, especially from the days when Manfred would still occasionally post himself, write things about his keyboards, etc. - all that is now basically inaccessible...
I think if the software had been updated to a newer version, more people would have posted again. I've seen it happen on other forums. Spam isn't hard to deal with as long as you have one or two additional mods who can delete it quickly. Some fans might have done it, had you asked.

Plus, there is a reason why nobody should close down a forum without notice - people should be allowed to save the most important threads, their private messages, and have a chance to exchange email addresses with those members they want to stay in contact with. It's frustrating 'cause it's the third forum I was on that closed quickly without such necessary time given.

Anyway, how about some new product for us MMEB fans. Lone Arranger is five years old now, the Bootleg Archives were a nice stopgap. Manfred has been promising a new Earth Band album for years now. None of us are getting any younger, and who knows how long the band will continue to exist? At the very least, a full, untampered-with, HD audio and video Blu-Ray concert video release would be good to properly record the band for posterity. And you already have some excellent source material in form of the gig the band played in 2015 at the SWR1 Hitparade (still with Jimmy on drums, R.I.P.), this was filmed in HD, well-mixed and it hopefully still exists. It was a shortened set but the audience was so into it, it would be great to put it out as an official video document. I'm sure there would be decent bonus material to add (including the priceless interview that Mick and Robert did a few hours earlier at the radio station, talking about oxygen tents and ironing!).

And to drive the point home, I almost didn't realize there's four archive releases out now... if it wasn't for a comment over on SuperDeluxeEdition.com...

Ah...your first concert. I'm sure you had a good time! You must have lived in Ulm at the time. At that time I was stationed at Wiley Barracks in Neu Ulm (1978 to 1981).
You mentioned you found an old article about the concert from a local paper. Would you mind scanning and emailing a copy to me? I would really appreciate it! My email address is mjvtlv@yahoo.com THANKS

    Mark,
Sorry for answering late, I was on holiday...
It was my first concert ever and I tried to keep as much as possible in my mind.
Apart from that there were some articles in our local newspaper. I just found one in my "archives".

Christine, Awesome....thank you for the info.
I'm pretty sure this is the group that opened for MMEB when I saw them in Ulm.
    Thank you from California,

When I saw the band in April 1979 in Saarbrücken, it was Lucifer's Friends who supported the Earth Band.

But it was the Somewhere in Africa Tour.

    Hi James,
No UK dates planned at present, keep an eye on the tour dates on www.manfredmann.co.uk, in recent years it has just been the odd UK date, always worth travelling to.

I've been obsessed with you guys since I was a 7 year old kid......Angel Station is one of my favourite albums of all time......that keyboard solo in DKIC takes me to another dimension. My life has indeed been enhanced by your music...I couldn't live without it.....Thank you xo

    Geoff (Wednesday, 05 June 2019 19:57)

In the comments after one of the many Youtube renditions of "Joybringer" somebody has said "my husband played synthesiser on that recording" and I assume it wasn't Manfred's wife. Why on earth would manfred need a session musucian.....if he did.....which I doubt. Any ideas?

    Hi Dave,
As Manfred has said in the past, if someone books the band they will play, however I think its unlikely that they will play the U.S. given its so long since they last played there (40+ years). Book a trip and come and see them in Europe?

Belated, but the gig in Helsingborg last month was fantastic: I flew over from Gatwick in the morning, back home the next day. I've got Steve's song prompt as a souvenir. Best thing I've done all year, thankyou. Can't wait for Graz and Stavanger.

Being a MMEB fan since my 15, now I wonder why the Band still hasn't any albums in 5.1 Surround sound and Hi-Res edition? Best of all it would be full catalogue (the Black Box) or... most fabulous albums on Blu-ray Audio 5.1, DVD-Audio 5.1, SACD 5.1.
Please, give this idea to Mr. Mann!
Look forward to see the your 5.1/Hi-Res on store shelves anyday...

    Hi Marco,

Sorry no idea regarding the signed vinyl box set. In terms of Plains Music, yes there was a vinyl version released. According to Discogs, Intuition Records INT-3062-1 in Germany and PVB Music PVBC 13, PVBC (D) in South Africa. Have a look at Discogs.com. Hope that helps.

Great to see these tour dates being archived - so my very first live concert was The Hague februari 1983 when I was 14!

Some years ago there was a vinyl box set with all MMEB records signed by Manfred for sale - is that still available? And has 'Plains Music' ever been released on vinyl?

Cheers from Amsterdam, keep up the good work and play on!

The date with Uriah Heep in Paris was 9 June 1975, Paris, France. Palais des Sports, with Uriah Heep
If you have a look at the Tour Archive (almost) all the dates are there.

Any chance of gigs in the UK or France later in 2019 ?

Hi Nigel. I have done some research on when Manfred toured Australia in 1971. The first two gigs were Thursday 6 May in Perth WA at Beatty Park Aquatic Centre (generally just referred to locally as Beatty Park) and Friday 7 May in Melbourne VIC at Festival Hall. You may want to adjust your itinerary of dates. Happy to discuss. Good to see someone in here maintaining access to Platform End!

    Hi guys.
I just want to thank You for Your performance at Göta Lejon Stockholm on 5/3-2019.
Please don't take this wrong but I had actually never heard of Manfred Mann before the concert, I was "dragged" to the event together with some dudes :). Evening arrives and I had almost forgot, and I had "low" expectations (not knowing anything about anything). Göta Lejon was full to the last seat and the atmosphere seemed to be on top. I got a positive surprise. The joy and love You radiated during the performance was so vivid, and I left with a big smile on my face. Thanks! You were all great of course, but can't help being a bit stunned by Micks guitar... :))

Hi. Missing gig from your list? The band played Keele University, Staffordshire on 14/3/79. I have the ticket (if you want a jpg copy for the website). My friend says he remembers Chris Slade playing a drum solo in the encore Mighty Quinn, but I reckon he’d left the year before. Maybe Chris played a guest performance...before JohnL joined?? Anyone?

Nigel - wouldn't it have been nice to at least inform the users ahead of closing it? Also the link is still there on the website. Some kind of "official" statement for anyone coming to the website would be nicer than simply locking and then deleting it without notice. As I'm not on facebook, this was my only source of MMEB news... :-(
