Manfred Mann's Earthband - On The Road December 2001

Saturday, 7 December, Leipzig, Germany

Hi Panther, Asbjorn, Lothar and all the others,

We wish you had been there yesterday in Leipzig! It was really a very special gig :-))) Nothing there was like we know it from the other concerts, but it was great!

The night began just a bit strange. Thomas was born in Leipzig, he knows nearly every street there, and we had a city map - but we couldn`t find the "Gasthof Zweinaundorf" in Leipzig - Mölkau! We had a terrible weather - a bit of rain, fog, darkness -you couldn`t see so much and we only looked for the numbers of the houses, when we found the right street. We needed number 110 - there was a petrol station with number 74, then we saw 96, and the next one was 149!!! ? Okay, we returned and started again - no, all the numbers around 100 didn`t exist!? Next try - we asked in that petrol station. The girl there didn`t know the Gasthof, but behind us in the queue a worker said: "Oh yes, that is some km along the street, yes, still after those 150 - numbers! Follow my lorry, I will show you the way!" Thanks to that nice guy we found it now - and were surprised. We did not expect such a fine hotel in that area (How Thomas said - this is the wild East of Leipzig!). Inside they had a hall for around 1000 people (estimated without seats) and a nice restaurant. We were early enough and decided to spend some time in the restaurant - right decision, the band had already been there :-) Mick said something like - it will be a very funny gig tonight. And I understood what he meant when we later looked into the hall: There was the stage and the mixer, of course, a free room in front of the stage - and around a lot of tables, very nice prepared for a meal. ??? It looked like a big party, not like a rock concert! Also at the gallery the guests could sit down and eat, and every ticket was connected with a reservation for one of the seats there, as we were told by the very nice boss of the house and his team. A little bit confused we returned to the restaurant, where later also should be the merchandising - the next new arrangement to us :-) 8 p.m. - The hall was well filled with a lot of people, estimated 500 at all tables, and the band Beat-Club started to play - well done, music from the 60ies (but we were born too late for that kind of music), and a view into the hall showed us many of the guests dancing in front of the stage in a very good mood. Just a dance-party - okay, that was very good to know, our band would not play in ront of some people who sit at their tables and eat! :-)

Around 9 p.m. - some of the visitors stood already in front of the stage, waiting for the Earth Band. Pat was so kind to have a look at the stand in the restaurant, so we were able to stay in the hall and enjoy the gig. And we enjoyed it very much! Because now it was like always- the free room in the middle was closed filled by the audience, the rest of the visitors stayed at their tables, but on the gallery nobody sat any longer, and the mood was better than in Erfurt the day before!

And the band was top again - very funny and brilliant as ever. This time I concentrated more on Pete - he played steady like a clock, absolute professional, and he had a very good drive, but always not too hard - great! And once more it was our impression, that he would play with the band already since years. But they all had been fantastic, I enjoyed Steve in Carol very much - he plays not only the bass but also with the whole body - it is a pity that the bass guitar is not such a solo instrument to give him more of such chances! Highlights of the night were to me Mick`s guitar solo in Carol - I cannot describe it, you must have heard it! And Manfred in Castles - absolute fantastic. In Angels a new version of the famous "60", no, not Chevy - we wonder what we will get tonight at this point from Mick :-) Noel was everywhere on stage, and he tried another time the "Flohwalzer" on the keyboards before Redemption Song :-) (He did it also in Magdeburg in March this year.) Then he tried Mick`s acoustic guitar in Davy - sorry, Noel, we couldn`t hear your playing infront of the stage, Mick on the other guitar was much louder, or was that better so??? :-) At the end of Davy the first rows got a shower from Noels glass of water. Now it was time for us to return to the restaurant, and passing the audience rows we saw how much they enjoyed the gig - it was really great!

Back at the stand we got a live performance from Pat "on drums" in Mighty - he didn`t need any real drums to be great! Then we heard the last big applause, and the first people came in for some CDs or T-Shirts (yes, we have T-Shirts again, only size XL, but that is a size which nearly everyone could wear :-), so you have a good chance to get one at the Christmas tour or in Aschaffenburg if you still need one... ) But the best was the fact that Manfred and the band returned to the restaurant, too, to give some autographs there. I saw so many happy people with that spark in their eyes - they came back and said to us - could you imagine, I GOT AUTOGRAPHS FROM MMEB!!! AND FROM THE BOSS HIMSELF! Oh yes, I know how they feel, we are "Eastern Germans", too, and 15 years ago we could never imagine to have Manfred in person at the Earth Band stand signing CDs and old records, just next to us...! Hopefully they will do the same tonight, it is a chance for the people which comes not so often back...

The party went on in the hall, now with "Beat-Club" again. And the same will happen tonight, this evening is sold out since months - we are looking forward to the next rocknight in the Gasthof Zweinaundorf and we want to thank the owner of the hotel already now for his great project. It is unusual, but very nice! Tomorrow I will tell you how it was tonight. In the moment we only hope we`ll get not the same thick fog like we had yesterday on our way back home - 100 km where you can see only 20-50 m were not so fine.

Regards

Karin

Sunday 8 December, Leipzig, Germany

Hi everybody,

We are back again and after a long night and a few hours of sleep we want to give the last report from our weekend tour. First - after that 3 days we are so sorry that we cannot manage it to make Aschaffenburg today, too, especially because we know there will be a lot of our friends from the fan family. Have a wonderful gig tonight, and we hope we`ll meet most of you at the Christmas tour - in nearly one week!!! :-) We are looking forward to your report about the Colos Saal...

Yesterday we started some hours later than the day before our journey to Leipzig - we knew already what will go on and the weather was much better and there was not such a lot of traffic on the autobahn like we had on Friday. So we arrived at 7.30 p.m. in Mölkau, entered like the day before the restaurant to have a drink (meanwhile I got used to their mineral water there :-) ). Some of the band technicians sat there, too, and with them a guy - we were sure we`ve seen him before, but we were not sure who he is because he was talking there and we saw only his back. So we took place at the bar and waited for the Earth Band gig, listening to the music of "Beatclub" in the hall around the corner.

This time the audience was a bit older than on Friday. The tickets were expensive enough - I saw the price of 75 DM on the reservation lists. And the evening had been sold out since March. So the hotel was already well filled when we arrived, and in front of the stage they stood much closer than the day before. We had not been quick enough and got this time only a place at the left side of the front row, in front of the loudspeakers. (Mick told me after the show that we are mad to stay in such a position - oh yes, we know, but how shall we stay in the last row or in the restaurant if we get the chance to see such a fantastic show??? BTW, we saw our number 70 on that weekend, and it`s still so interesting like the very first one! We enjoy to be so mad :-)...) Around us, on the left side of the stage, some people who stood very calm. Most of them older than us - it was a bit strange. In the rows behind us the mood was much better, also on the right sight, in front of Manfred. In all the audience was even better than the day before, they were very good in clapping their hands, but didn`t know the lyrics - the old problem we know from East Germany. When the gig started someone next to me said something about "my name is Jack" - ??? And in the middle of the gig two of them left the front row to sit down again - now we had the right position and could leave the speaker :-) At this time the audience behind us got already really excited.

The band was as good as the day before. To be honest I liked the Friday gig more, but I cannot say why. May be there was simply everything new for us and yesterday it was already a "homeplay". The best of the gig was yesterday to us Redemption Song - Noel sang again his own lyrics and asked the audience to sing with him in a very funny way - Noel, you are not only a great singer but an actor on stage! :-) To answer your question, Roland - no, he didn`t talk about the rasta-locks at all three gigs, but he talked so much and so funny on stage and kept such a good contact to the audience that we didn`t miss anything :-) T hat`s another point we like so much in the Earth Band gigs - there is always somewhere on stage busy to keep contact to the audience, if not Noel, then Mick, and the people enjoy that so much! On stage there is always something going on, here a gesture, there a smile, or a wave to someone in the last rows or at the gallery. Nice to see also like Manfred is playing his instrument - we had yesterday a fantastic view across that little stage to him and he played not only with his hands but he "talked" also to the audience and to his band with gestures and expression. Although I missed yesterday a bit that full keyboard sound we had the days before. I would give something to get only once more that great keyboard in the back of Mick`s Father-Solo like you played it 1998 in Emsdetten, Manfred. And we still miss the best guitar solo of Father...

BTW - yesterday the "Chevy" in Angels was back on the road :-)

Another part of the gig I liked yesterday very much was - yes, Blinded. Most of the fan family had heard that song so often that it had lost a bit of the "kick" to us, we both included. At home we never look for Blinded in our CD player. But it was played yesterday with so many lovely details, especially on the guitar that I forgot for some moments to clap my hands, listening only to the music :-) We wonder if we will get a chance in the future to hear the old full version of that song live on stage again, like you played it in 97 and 98, with that fantastic slow middle part...

After Davy we returned to the restaurant - and we had difficulties to find our way back through the enthusiastic people :-) Pat had already prepared the stand (Thank you, Pat, for giving us the chance to see these two gigs in full length!), so we had only to take it over. Just like the day before the people around us had to wait a bit, but then came Mick, Steve and Pete into the restaurant and stayed there - another fantastic chance for everybody to ask them for autographs, and the audience used that very well :-) It was a pity that Manfred did not come out that night, everybody was waiting for the boss himself. - Suddenly there was a deep "HO, HO, HO" in the air, then came in - yes, really Santa Claus in person, in his red costume - Who was that??? - You surely know it already: He had rasta locks under his hood :-) And of course also Santa Noel stayed then with us in that restaurant.

When the main business at our stand was over and the people stood around the tables with the band members and technicians, we had some nice talks with Mick and Noel who came over to our corner - and there was that guy again who had been with the band before the gig. Sorry, Andy, but I recognized you only when you spoke about our first and only meeting in the bar in Braunschweig two years ago - may be it was the late hour or my personal stupidity, or you have simply to come over to Germany much more :-)) We had so many fantastic gigs here. However, it was of course Andy Taylor, and we had another interesting talk together. And to answer you, Mike: I heard from Andy that at least Castles is in discussion to be on his CD - box set of 4 CDs which will hopefully come out next year! And many many more very interesting songs. We really look forward to that edition, Andy! Andy also promised to write something about his weekend in Leipzig and Aschaffenburg, so let`s watch the Backstage-Area of this site carefully :-)

After some hours in that great atmosphere it was time to leave - it was already around 2 in the morning. So we left Leipzig together with Pat who drove already the long way to Aschaffenburg for the next gig - hope you had a good journey, Pat.

It`s hard to return to work after such a tour, but we are lucky enough, because we could say yesterday when we left - see you in 10 days! :-)) Many thanks again to the band and all technicians for your fantastic work and your kindness, and best regards to everyone

On Saturday, I was at the gig in pratteln too, but my english is not very good and the other reports are very well, so I can concentrait me for a short report about the gig in Herisau..

At 20.00 the same support Band as saturday started ( yes, her name was Susan Orus).

The crowd, about 600 fans had been there, gave her a good chance (not the same as in Pratteln). But finaly, all the poeple were waiting for the main act (the same as in Pratteln).

At 21.15 the Earth Band gig began, the same setlist as Pratteln, but they didn`t play S.O.S. How ever; I thought, the gig in Basel were very good, but the party in Herisau was absolut brilliant. Manfred was playing with the whole crowd. I never saw this since the 80'is. Mick was brilliant as ever and Noel gave a short Luis Armstrong parody. The crowd were singing and crying during the whole gig (I couldn't hear my own words). I only was consternatet about this shit spotlight during the solo's (the lightshow in Pratteln was better, the stage in Herisau was to little for the whole lightshow and the spotlight was changing the night for a day).

One thing is sure: the weekend was a long journey worth, on saturday in Pratteln and on sunday in Herisau. What a weekend !!

Best regards

Very first report of Reichenbach

Posted by Roland & Paul

Hi family :-)

after arriving at 2.00 a.m in the early morning we try to get our best with this high speed report. Lean back and enjoy ;-))))))))

Reaching "Die Halle" without any snow at 6.10 p.m we started the evening with a drink in the pub in the same building. In good hope to enter the hall at first we were disappointed by the security team as the door of the pub near to the entrance had been locked now. So we had to leave the pub and to go to the other side to the "normal" entrance. At this time lots of other people were also waiting to get inside, but now we had to wait behind them in the queue of other fans :-( Finally it had been 7.10 p.m when the door opened and anyway we had no problem to reach the front row.

The support band "Lizard" with music of the seventies started at 8.00 p.m. and wasn't bad - but the sound wasn't clear and too loud. 45 minutes later they finished and after a short break our band entered the stage at 9.15 p.m.

Well known setlist: Joybringer - Shelter - Castles - Martha - Carol - Dancing - Angels - Father - Demo Man - She was - Blinded - Redemption - Davy - Mighty Quinn. Great atmosphere in the former industrial hall filled with estimate 1000 people. Among them the following family-members: Sebastian and Martin, Uschi and girlfriend, Goro with Britta and sister, Lemonbabe with parents and whole relationship, of course Karin and Thomas (with their Sunday-Shop), Lothar and last but not least us (Sigrid, Roland and Pink Panther). Also some new fans - please forgive us that we do not know all of their names.

The band was in a very good condition from the beginning with a little difference to our last gigs in September (regarding Micks guitar playing and Manfred's keyboard). Especially Manfred made a very good show, laughing, making jokes with the audience and the band.

Whilst playing his guitar solo in Carol Mick was conducted by Manfred. The new drummer Pete May had been introduced by Mick with his nicknames "Maurice" and "Asphalt Cowboy". Pete did a very good job - most of the time with a smiling face.

Another highlight of the gig was the "fight" between Manfred at the keyboard and Mick at the guitar when the performed "Father". In the middle of the concert the band played the melody of "Do they kno it's Christmas time" for about 20 seconds.

The audience too was in a great mood, clapping hands and singing all of the songs. Noel did his own show as ever in Redemption Song by singing one verse in a foreign language (maybe Jamaican??) - and giving the typically shower with a water bottle to the front row. The show - much too short as ever - finished after nearly two hours.

As a special Christmas gift after the concert Mick appeared at the audience and gave everybody the occasion to get some autographs (one fan asked Mick to sign his complete collection of vinyl records).

After a small talk and some family photos with Mick we left the hall lucky and satisfied at midnight. Thank you for this fantastic Christmas event.

The way back did need much more time as it now was snowing cats, dogs and Santas :-)))

Merry Christmas to all of you - and good night.

Your pink report team ;-)

Manfred Mann's Earth Band & Lizard - Reichenbach, H2O, 21.12.2001

I'm A Man, Boys Are On The Road, One Of These Days, Riding On A Train (schon was älter), wieder einmal Lonesome Guitar (ich bleib dabei, besser als das Original von Doc Holliday) und einige andere Nummern gehen einfach vom Ohr direkt in den Bauch und die Beine.

Wer weiß noch, wer Davy's On The Road Again geschrieben hat?
